  • Franchising: understand the game before you sign

Joining or leaving a franchise is not a question of loyalty to a brand. It is an economic and contractual decision. The network can bring know-how, brand awareness and support. It also has a cost that must be measured before signing.

What the candidate is really buying

A franchise generally combines an entry fee, an operating royalty, an advertising contribution and supply or concept obligations. These items must be compared with the value actually received: brand, tools, training, network animation, purchasing terms and field support.

Leaving a network is not automatically a failure. It can be the result of a calculation: does the value of the brand received still justify its cost? This question is prepared before signing, when the candidate can ask for information, challenge the assumptions and have the contract reviewed.

    Questions to ask before signing

    1. What is the total annual cost, beyond the entry fee?
    2. Which services are actually included?
    3. Which results and which assumptions support the forecast?
    4. Which clauses govern renewal, transfer and exit?

    FAQ

Is leaving a franchise always a failure?

No. It is sometimes a strategic choice. The consequences do, however, depend on the contract, the brand and the obligations still running.

Which document should you ask for before signing?

The pre-contractual information document and its appendices are an essential starting point, to be analysed with suitable advisers.
